4th Friedrich World Championship

The Final

A: The players choose their roles

Anton Telle, best player of the qualification round, chooses Maria Theresa.

Mannfred Wichmann, second-ranked in the qualification round (but tied in points with Anton), opts for the hot seat: Prussia.

Josef Gundel decides to be the Pompadour and Björn Apelqvist takes the Tsarina's throne.
Möge der Beste gewinnen!

Then, the game starts. Highly concentrated and watched by Richard Sivél, the designer of Friedrich, they play for the Friedrich-trophy.

B: The game

The game started quite fast with attacks from all sides. Austria made high pressure in Silesia right from the start, by neglecting Saxony. Prussia opted for a defense in spades, her strong suit. However, already in turn 3, Schwerin made a −3 retreat. And this should be the characteristics of this final game: Manfread opted repeatedly for retreats in Silesian spades without ever making real use of his strong suit!

Russia chased Lehwaldt right from the start with its 4 generals. Bjö manoeuvered very clever, and thus he was able to encircle Lehwaldt and wipe him out of East Prussia already in turn 4, and reach Kammin with Saltikow und Fermor at the same time! After the conquest of East Prussia, there was a first bloody battle in clubs. And Russia prevailed with a very long and strong hand of clubs. This shattered the Prussian defense considerably, and Dohna had to enter new positions in Gollnow (diamonds)

France had an easy time at the beginning, since Cumberland moved to Saxony chasing Hildburghausen around. However, the defense of Manfred was a clever and flexible zone-defense. He was able to establish the dreaded triangle. So, despite the early conquests, France would have to work hard for the final objective of Magdeburg.

Starting with turn 8, after the clubs disaster against Russia, the Prussian defense became more and more an improvising one. Fight after fight in Silesian spades occured, and against the Russians Gollnow simply had to hold. However, Russia even had enough clubs to attack the Prussians in diamonds and so Dohna had to leave Gollnow (turn 10).

After turn 9, France lost India, immediately followed by "Poems" and "Lord Bute" shortly thereafter (turn 12).

Things looked not bright for Prussia, when the final showdown in Silesia happened: The last Prussian defenders were defeated. However, Austria had to use massivle their diamonds against the Prussian spades in order to achieve this. It seemed like Prussia prepared for a strategic diamonds defense in Saxony.

But, it was not enough time give to Manfred to taste the fruits of this strategy. Björn encircled Dohna in Cammin and killed him. With the simultaneous victory against Seydlitz at Stettin, the last objective city of Stargard was conquered! A fast paced win of the Tsarina in turn 13!

C: Pictures

Manfred Wichmann, the Prussian King, has to think a lot.

Björn Apelqvist, the "Tsarina".

Anton Telle as "Maria Theresa" and Josef Gundel as "Pompadour".

Turn 7: the situation in Silesia. Anton's 3-generals stack is pressing hard.

Turn 8: After the clubs defeat against Russia, Dohna has entered Gollnow.

Two turns later, the Gollnow position in detail.

Turn 11: Anton Telle (Austria) has encircled Keith. Manfred Wichmann lets him die without playing a single card.
Note that a prussian win in battle would have caused the elimination of the Austrian supply train.

Turn 12: France only needs Magdeburg for the win.

Turn 12: A new encirclement in Silesia. This time it is Schwerin who is killed. Anton uses almost all of his diamonds to do so (played against Manfreds spades).

Turn 13: Russian victory! Dohna is encircled and loses. Close to Stettin Seydlitz is defeated as well. Thus, Björn Apelqvist takes Stargard, his last objective.

And this makes Björn Apelqvist the World Champion !!

The Friedrich designer, Richard Sivél, holds a little speech before he hands out the trophy ...

... a lot of laughter ...

... which is even true for the responding words of Björn.

Björn, the World Champion, and the three Grandmasters: Josef Gundel, Anton Telle, Manfred Wichmann.

There were a lot of discussion about the game.

Manfred points out some crucial aspects of his defense.

Björn tells his point of view on the game...

... while Anton is analyzing his methodic advance in Silesia.

Many things needed their talk...

... and the Grandmaster medals have to handed out as well: Here, Grandmaster Anton Telle with Richard Sivél.

At the neighbouring table, Steffen Schröder, Dennis Kelsey and Arnold de Wijs are testing the brand new histogame "Maria", watched by Michel Lepetit.

And simultaneously the same players are playing Friedrich on a second table!!
Here, Arnold de Wijs, who cannot get enough...
