14th Friedrich World Championship, 2019

The Final

A: The players take their seats

John McCullough has the first choice and opts for Prussia.

David Önkür takes the seat of Maria Theresa.

Followed by Guy Atkinson (Elisabeth) and Klaus Blum (Pompadour).

And then the game starts. May the best one win!

B: How the game played out

The game started quite normal. After 3 turns, John had collected a good hand of clubs and spades and 3 reservers. So he opted for a clubs defense in Kammin against Russia and Sweden, and for a spades defense in Silesia against Austria. France should be stopped at Magedburg (hearts).

The spades and clubs kept coming throughout the game. And, even more important, John held 7 out of 10 reserves. (Remember, the tournament was played with 5 decks of TC.) When Lord Bute occurred in turn 8, John had no reason to panic.

One turn later, Sweden dropped out without having played a single TC.

In turn 12, David's Austrians attacked the Prussian main army at Oels. David took a −1 retreat, and was then encircled by the Prussians. David lost 24 troops! And this made Silesia safe for some turns.

The Imperial Army also made only slow progress, since John had succeeded in bringing a Prussian general including supply train to the Saxon spades sector.

Meanwhile Guy's Russians had run out of clubs. Therefore, Guy detached a general westwards to the Magdeburg region. His plan was to destabilize the Prussians, keeping his chances on victory still alive. After some skirmishes with Prussia and Hannover, Russia quit in turn 14.

France had been John's main concern anyway, since his hearts were not too strong. But for Klaus it was just the same. Until now John's triangle defense had worked well. But after the exit of Russia, the decisive battle with the French took place. For the first time in the game, John was unsure about its outcome. However, the Prussian hearts and reservers were enough! And when Ferdinand succeeded to move onto Magdeburg it was basically game over, since Hannover hat ca. 40 points in hearts plus 2 reserves.

Poems came in turn 15, India in turn 16. The game ended with a Prussian victory in turn 20 (America).

C: Pictures

John's turn.

Guy, moving the Swedes.

Turn 9: Sweden has just moved and controls a lot of objectives. However, at the end of the turn, Sweden will drop out — without having played a single TC.

Turn 13: David Önkür's main army having suffered a −1-retreat finds itself encircled. 24 troops are lost in the battle!

Turn 14: Because Guy Atkinson has run out of clubs, his Russians are advancing to Magdeburg. At the end of the turn, the Tsarina dies, however.

Turn 19: The second last turn. Once again, the French attack Ferdinand at Magdeburg. Hannover plays 35 points of hearts, and sends Richelieu off the board (and maybe into the arms of Madame de Nivernais).
