11th Friedrich World Championship, 2016

The Participants

Altogether 30 player competed in the 11th Friedrich World Championship. For 4 players it was their first participation.

The players came from the following countries: Germany (21), Spain (3), United Kingdom (2), Netherlands (2), Sweden (1), USA (1).

Due to the format, the number of players has to be a multiple of 4. Therefore, Rodrigo Witzel, Thorsten Hennig, Alex Hofmann, Thorsten Groß and the Friedrich designer Richard Sivél filled the gaps as spontaneous helpers. They played out of competition.

Who was playing whom was decided by drawing lots. Like in the previous years, every player could meet each player only once in the tournament. Furthermore, the lots were pre-sorted into pots in such a way that players coming from the same city could not meet each other.

Game 14: Peter Hannappel is optimizing his defence of Saxony.

Game 17: A new tactical tool, the so-called de Wijs Line, invented by the de Wijs brothers. The flipped Russian stack will be eliminated due to lack of supply.
